What Causes Difficulty In Burping With History Of Flu?

default
Posted on Wed, 6 Apr 2016
Question: My mother is 83 years old. For the past 2 nights she has had difficulty burping. The burp comes up in her throat and stops. It is quite annoying. Let me give you a little recent history that may impact your diagnosis. She had a little flu bug in early January. The doctor prescribed amoxicillin. She had a 5 day supply. She finished taking it 3 weeks ago. The medication caused her to have constipation. In fact, when she urinated, you could smell the amoxicillin for 2 weeks after she finished the medication. Within the past 4 days (when the smell of the amoxicillin stopped), her bowels began to move freely again.

Brief Answer:
Antbiotics not required. Gurgling with lukewarm water should help.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

The metabolism of most of the drugs is mediated by the liver while the excretion is done by the kidneys. So in aged persons like your mother, where metabolism has slowed down, it is possible for the drug to remain in the body quite long after the medicine has been stopped. Probably that is the reason for the smell in her urine.

About the difficulty in burping, it could due to reflux or a common cold. I would not suggest any antibiotics for the same but she can however take some antacids containing simethicone since that will help in expelling the excessive gases from her stomach. Taking cetirizine (OTC antiallergic) once daily for a few days should also help. Ask her to take plenty of yogurt or curd since it contains plenty of beneficial bacteria and should be helpful. It will also aid in proper bowel habits. It is very important to take plenty of dietary fibers or even fiber supplements. If she can walk freely, I would suggest regular morning walk as well.

I am sure that with the above measures she would be fine.
