Posted on Thu, 20 Aug 2015
Question: Earlier today I experienced for the first time in my life (age 85) enormous difficulty defecating. Stool was very hard, felt rocklike. After a very long time I did pass some of it. For the next few hours it is remaining sensitive and signaling me for a bowel movement which fails. ???

Brief Answer:
try miralax or an enema

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
This can be quite a problem.
The first things I would try would be a dose of miralax tonight and if you have no results by tomorrow morning then do an enema. Both of these are available over the counter at the drug store. If you have no results and develop pain you may need to see your doctor or go to emergency.
In the future the best things you can do to avoid this are drinking plenty of water, exercising daily and eating plenty of fiber and fresh fruits and vegetables.
I hope you get some relief soon and let me know if you have further questions
Regards,
Dr. Robinson
