What Causes Discomfort In Left Upper Quadrant Of Abdomen During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Tue, 24 Mar 2015
Question: I´ve been feeling uncomfortable in my left upper quadrant of abdomen for a few months. At one time I felt a few tender swollen nodse on my rib left side but the tenderness went away after a few days. Now, when I push lightly right beneath left ribcage a little to the left of sternum, I can feel something move inside, like a peace of bone, cartilage or something else. What can it be? I also still have problems with my stomach, hiccups after every meal, heartburn and air, does it have something to do with this? This whole thing is starting to freak me out!!

Brief Answer:
may be costo-chondritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.

To recapitulate: Female / 32 - gastroscopy, ultrasonography and blood tests normal - uncomfortable left upper quadrant for few months - felt tender swollen nodes on left side ribs but no tenderness now - feeling something move like a piece of bone, cartilage inside under the left rib cage - wants to know what it is - hiccoughs after every meal - heartburn - air - is it related to the present problem -

Your queries : What can it be and do the other symptoms to do with this ...

This may most probably be Costochondritis. This is inflammation of the cartilages and the tissues around it. The feeling like a piece of bone or cartilage can a part of the tissues that got inflamed with the circumscribed swelling and giving a feeling as you explained.

The presence of hiccoughs after every meals is suggestive that the full stomach is touching the part of the diaphragm near this site of inflammation. This causes irritation of the diaphragm which in turn causes hiccoughs; inflammation of the stomach causing heartburn and air; the stress and / or anxiety causing, instigating or enhancing the present problems.

You have to remember that all the test done are supportive of the diagnosis and have to be correlated with the actual physical findings (signs) and the symptoms.
Hence it is important to consult a General Surgeon for clinical evaluation, actual physical examination and correlation.

Since you have already undergone Upper GI Endoscopy, ultrasonography and blood tests, the remaining tests are:
MRI of the affected area may show the inflamed area, muscles nearby and lump you are feeling. It may also show if anything else is present near the diaphragm, liver, and other organs in the vicinity.

I hope this answers your queries, please feel free to ask for more if you have any relevant questions or if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

Thank you so much for the answer, I was supposed to have an MRI but then I got pregnant and I´m afraid that MRI might have a negative effect on the fetus. Do you think it is ok to wait to have the MRI till after the baby is born? Is MRI 100% ok for pregnant women? The thing I am most concerned about, and the concerns almost ruin every day for me, is that I am so afraid that I might have cancer or something else malignant! There is no family history of cancer though, do you think any of these symptoms suggest cancer?

Brief Answer:
Not at all, does not look like cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your appreciation.
MRI is absolutely safe in pregnancy as per my knowledge; yet on the safer side get this confirmed by your Doctor and preferably from the Radiologist.
If they confirm, you can safely go for MRI.
How many months are you carrying now ?
The Hormonal changes that the pregnancy causes as a normal, natural phenomenon can have effects on your present problem too.

Such a lump symptom complex that your have noted can not be cancer at the age of 32 and since you are carrying, ultrasonography being normal, why do you think of the devil called Cancer.

Enjoy the motherhood, the God has bestowed on you.

I am 1 1/2 mont pregnant now. I also suffer from anxiety so thats probably why I think of cancer a lot and also because I ceep hearing about young people dying of cancer. Does costochondritis heal on its own? And the stomach problems? Or is there something I need to do?

Brief Answer:
Anxiety is understood, but this is easiest to be warded off by you alone

Detailed Answer:
Pregnancy of one and half months itself can cause all the anxiety.
Stop hearing about what others say.
See the incidence is so less that you should stop worrying about all this, cancer and so.
Your stress and anxiety indirectly or directly can increase the pain you have.

Since you are one and half months pregnant, all the medicines have to be avoided.
You can apply heat or ice locally, whichever gives you relief.
Have good diet and sound sleep of 8 to 10 hours- this is the best way to reduce the stress and anxiety.
Meditation or at least getting into the hobbies and activities you like the most also has a great positive effect. (do not ask others for your choices - go by your heart)
Believe me, do this and you will have a new life..
