What Causes Discomfort In Sternum On Exertion?

default
Posted on Wed, 24 Sep 2014
Question: I have a sensation of discomfort roughly at the base of my neck (trachea area), and it sometimes goes down to about the sternum. The best I can describe is the feeling I get in the bronchial area after visiting our smoking relative - like the cilia have been irritated. I have no reflux. This discomfort is sometimes accompanied by a mild ache between the shoulder blades. This throat/sternum discomfort is transient, and seems to come on with mild exertion. Could I have a developing pleurisy or is this a symptom of a muscle strain or ?? I am not running a fever.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX. Thanks for asking HCM.
I am DR Rakeh Sharma answering your query.

As you are complaining of discomfort in sternum on exertion with lump in throat
calls for an immediate consultation with your doctor,to rule out any cardiac ailment.Get detailed investigation done.If all is well then we might think in terms of other possibilities.

Other possibility:From Your description it seems to be either reflux or Laryngopharyngitis though you have only discomfort and believe no pain still these are strong possibilities.
Though you are not feeling any reflux but you should keep this in mind while deciding medication.
Try to remember has any thing hard gulp by you might have caused local injury if yes then that may give the same feeling.
Any way laryngopharyngitis caused either mechanical or chemical(acid reflux) injury
seems probable cause as you have no fever chances of infection is not there,But lets rule out cardiac ailment first.
All said and done please see a doctor immediately.
Good Luck.
