What Causes Discomfort While Chewing Despite Having Surgery For Mandibular Fracture?

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Sep 2015
Question: Hi,

My Wife had undergone a surgery recently, but is still not feeling comfortable. I am enclosing pre and post operative scans and medical diagnosis report for further details.

The patient had 2 fractures one in the jaw line and the other in the chin area and the doctors recommended putting two plates at both the areas.

During the Post operation follow up, the oral/ dental doctors mentioned that the jaw line plate has not been inserted and the bone has grown in a wrong direction which needs immediate correction through a surgery.

The second opinion from the plastic surgeons who did the surgery says that there is no need for second operation and the treatment is going in the right direction.

The patient is still suffering with pain an d is unable to open her mouth. She is on liquid diet since her operation day.

Pls advise if we need to go ahead with the second operation.

Brief Answer:
Untreated mandibular fracture, consult oral surgeon, go for resurgery .

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX ,

Thanks for consulting Healthcare magic .
This is Dr. Priyanka Tiwari answering your query .

I have read your query and gone through reports you have attached.
As far as I have observed in post operative scan there is a mandibular fracture line in region of condyle and ramus of mandible that was not treated. It may not be healing without fixing with plates.

Since the patient is still suffering from pain and limited mouth opening even after surgery this can be due to that untreated fracture leading to deranged occlusion. Hence my opinion is to consult Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon for Clinical examination. It may require Resurgery by intermaxillary fixation and fitting of plate of fractured region of the jaw line.

I suggest to go for treatment as early as possible .

God bless get well soon and please clarify with me if you have further queries.
