What Causes Disturbed Sleep?

default
Posted on Fri, 28 Feb 2014
Question: Hello Doctor, I feel my sleep is not proper. I can't sleep for 6 or 7 hours a day properly. Also I get a lot of dreams which make me feel that I am awake and I feel that I am not getting into deep sleep for long time or no deep sleep at all. I am not sure what is happening. Many times even if I sleep very late , I wake up early. I mean I sleep only for hardly 4-5 hours. During that time also, i get lot of dreams. Also I am very sensitive to surroundings. When there is heavy noise ( above some normal level which I am adjusted to) I don't get sleep. But I have observed other people , they get sleep normally whatever may be the surroundings. Daily I feel I should get good and uninterrupted sleep for few more hours and with as less dreams as possible. Dreams that come are usually related to my daily activities and thoughts. If I am thinking about something before I get sleep, it feels that I continue to think, percieve , hear about sometihng and do all other activities normally or abnormally even during sleep time , which probably might get translated to the feeling of dreams. But I know that I will not be awake during that time but It gives me the feeling of being awake. Totally I am not happy/satisfied with my sleep. Kindly let me know the reasons for this problem and give me suggestions for improving my sleep.

Brief Answer: it is a common problem and you will be fine. Detailed Answer: Hello and welcome to HCM! I can understand your problem completely; sleep is the ultimate refreshing and most important aspect for human being. In total your sleep is - either comes late, or disturbed, or you get up early from it, or there are dreams due to which you feel that your brain has not slept at all...as if it was working all night (as it would do in daytime)..right.. Sleep problems can be either alone ( primary insomnia ) or due to other illnesses, like depression, anxeity, etc. ( secondary insomnia). It would help me a lot in your treatment if I know something about the--- 1: time from which you are having sleep issues: days, weeks , or months or years.. 2: your predominant mood all time, like how do you feel about your life usually..anxious, or sad on and off or normal.. 3: is anyone else in your family suffering from similar complaint? 4: do you take alcohol or smoke? I could have easily told you about one or two sleeping pills which will give you a sufficient dreamless sleep, but you have described your complaint in such beautiful detail that I think you are someone who really wants to know --why this is happening to you and want to get rid of the problem completely. So, please furnish me details of the above questions and I will try to provide you a healthy treatment. # and do not worry, insomnia is amongst the most common clinical complaints we see and manage in our daily clinic...it will be solved.
