What Causes Dizziness And Imbalance Issues Post Head Injury?

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Feb 2015
Question: about 2-3 weeks ago I had a hard slam on the back of my head as I fell. I didn't have any problems except a bump on my head. Yesterday I started losing my balance and walking like a drunk. I still feel light headed and am still having balance problems when ever I walk. Is that unusual?

Brief Answer:
Possible TBI?need MRI brain at the earliest

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam,

I understand your query and concern.

As per your suggested history you seem to have a significant risk of traumatic brain injury.

Symptoms particularly Dizziness and Gait imbalance point to further evaluation to rule out intracranial hemorrhage if any.

Considering your age,the risk of Subdural hematoma is also quite high.

Since the site of injury is located at the back of the head, there is high chance of damage to balance maintaining structures like cerebellum

Hence I advise you to get MRI brain scan-fast spin echo mode to rule out traumatic brain injury/TBI.

Further management is largely based on test results.

Post your further queries,if any.
Thank you.
