default
Posted on Wed, 14 Sep 2016
Question: Several hours ago I blew my nose very hard and experienced dizziness, focus a little and lose of balance for quite some while. I still don't feel 100%, but much better. Do I need to be concerned? I slept for a good two hours after this happened. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Can be an attack of vertigo.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. Your problem can be most likely due to vertigo. As you blowed your nose hard your auditory tube might have blocked and have given irritation and there by vertigo.
Check your blood pressure also. Taking anti vertigo medications like dimenhydrinate ( Dramamine) or meclizine will be helpful. Dramamine is available as over the counter and you can take in dosage of 50 mg 6 to 8 hourly. If there is feeling of blocked nose or ear then you can use local nasal decongestant sprays like xylometazoline ( otrivin ) also.
If there is no improvement then consult an ENT specialist to rule out other problems.

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.

Thank you Dr. XXXXXXX for the advice. I did purchase the recommended over the counter medications to have on hand. I do feel congestion and may use the spray if necessary. I researched online "Vertigo" and can see some possible symptoms that may be related to the inner ear that I have felt some concern. I am not trying to diagnose myself, just to understand and better describe to a specialist. I recently went to a hearing specialist and do have extreme wax build up against my ear drum. My hearing test was good and I do need to take care of this first and ask if there is further testing needed. Now I know where to start and hopefully any other concerns can be diagnose. If there is anything else you would like to add I will be happy to read. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Wax build up also can cause dizziness or tinnitus.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.

Thank you for your follow up.

Wax build up also can cause some amount of dizziness and tinnitus. Removing wax by the help of ENT specialist should be done after applying ear drops for softening wax in such case.

Decongestant spray and anti vertigo medication might be helpful to clear your problem. If not helping then a consultation with ENT specialist is well appreciated. He/she will do maneuvers to find out whether it is central (related to brain) or peripheral vertigo (related to ear).

Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.
