What Causes Dizziness When I Move Too Quickly?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Dec 2014
Question: I am a 42 y/o female in good health, except for my reason for consulting you. I run three to five miles daily, lift weights, and eat a variety of food. My weight is on the high end of average for my height. I take no medications and use meditation to control stress and anxiety. Despite this, I live with a nagging feeling of being light headed and if I move too quickly I do get a mild fleeting dizzy sensation. A week ago I had a severe, sudden attack of vertigo. For almost two straight days the room around me spun. I had nystagmus and vomiting. It has calmed down so I can sit up without the vertigo. My doctor told me I have a viral inner ear infection and it can take at least a week to get back to normal. It has been a week and my head still feels heavy and I get dizzy if I move too fast or do any of my normal activities of daily living. I can not go to work like this and now the panic is starting to creep in. Please advise.....do I see a neurologist? Is it a simple matter of more time?

Brief Answer:
Consideratio

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

I have a few thoughts related to the information you have provided. It certainly may take a little bit more time for your body to establish its equilibrium. This may be related to a viral type of labyrinthitis of the ear canal.

another consideration would be some type of abnormal heart rhythm which might come and go from time to time contributing to dizziness or lightheadedness. For this reason if the symptoms persist it would be reasonable for you to visit with the cardiologist or to have some type of cardiac monitor study performed.

Neurology consultation would be my last consideration if everything else is unrevealing.

might also be reasonable for your doctor to check a complete blood count to make sure you're not anemic and also to check your thyroid function to make sure your thyroid is functioning normally.

Thanks again for reaching out. I'm confident that you will get back to feeling at your optimal level of health in the near future it just may take some time.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
