Question: When I burp I feel faint. My primary care doctor has checked my carotid arteries and my EKG and they were okay, but I still have this problem and it is frightening at times. Please help if you can. Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that your symptoms do not seem to be related to any cardiac disorder.

Vagal nerve stimulation could be the cause of this clinical scenario. This is quite a benign cause, as this nerve innervates your digestive tract, as well as your heart. When there is gastric distension or burping, this nerve can be activated, thus leading to lower heart rate and low blood pressure, which cause fainting.

Another cause to be considered would be hiatal hernia.

I recommend consulting with your doctor and performing some tests:

- a chest X ray study for possible hiatal hernia
- a fibrogastroscopy would help investigate for possible gastro-esophageal disorders.

Anyway, your clinical situation does not seem to be anything serious. Just not to worry about it!

Meanwhile, I would recommend some tips to help avoid this problem:
- eating in small portions, several times during the day
- eat slowly, chew well when eating, in order to avoid possible air swallowing.

Regarding your blood pressure values they are quite normal. Dyastolic blood pressure values 68mm Hg, are not too low, just normal.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
