What Causes Dizziness While Standing Up And Bending Down?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 May 2016
Question: Hi, I've experienced dizziness twice in last week. Both while on golf course---same hole actually!! Usually happens after rising to feet following a put--head lowered etc. Could be hypertensive reaction according to doc friend. Used to happen randomly over last few years but these latest two are worrying. Health very good for 68, bp usually 135/85, no meds, no history, recent check up clear. Non smoker, 205, 6 ft and recent ski trip to Vail w/o incident. Again usually happens on golf course---could be lack of protein? Lots of people reacting to allergies here in Fla?? Regards, Gary

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Your symptoms seems to be related to orthostatic hypotension.

I recommend you to measure your blood pressure in sitting and standing up position.

A decrease in your systolic blood pressure more than 20 mmHg in standing up position, compared to sitting position would be indicative of orthostatic hypotension.

A Head up Tilt test is needed to rule in/out this possible disorder.

Some blood lab tests ( complete blood count, fasting glucose, blood electrolytes) are needed to exclude other secondary causes.

I would also recommend performing a Doppler ultrasound of the cervical arteries to examine the blood flow to the brain and exclude possible arterial narrowing.

You should discuss with your doctor on these issues.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
