What Causes Dizzy Spells With Nausea In Elderly?

default
Posted on Tue, 12 May 2015
Question: My 84 y/o mother-in-law lives in another state, has recently been diagnosed with a-fib and is now taking a blood thinner (medication unknown) and is scheduled for a pace-maker insertion on May 12th. However, yesterday she was taken to the emergency room via ambulance and admitted for the following symptoms (extending beyond 24 hours): severe dizziness/vertigo with loss of balance and inability to stand, complaint of "ear problem", severe nausea. Prior problems of shortness of breath with exertion and arthritis with impaired mobility continue; complete current medical history unavailable. Initially, the hospital physicians were concerned about an inner ear problem, but now are directing their inquiries into a possible pleurisy diagnosis. The family is concerned she may be misdiagnosed or medical attention is being directed at only one etiology; please advise as we think specialty consults with an ENT and cardiac physicians are warranted.

Brief Answer:
needs both consultations.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that your mother -in-law is having dizzy spells with nausea.

Answers and solutions for your queries.

1. Conduction defects of heart (a-fib) can cause dizzy spell due to inadequate blood supply to brain.

2. Inner ear problem like ( labyrinthitis, vestibual neuronitis) also causes dizziness with nausea.

3. In my opinion, she needs to see both ENT as well as cardiac physician.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
