What Causes Dry Cough And Clogged Sinuses While On Antibiotics And Steroid Spray?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Sep 2017
Question: I started a cold 18 days ago. I began as a sore throat and went to my head, with stuffy sinuses. It never went to my chest, but I have had some dry cough episodes. After 7 days my ears clogged up. After 14 days I went to a doctor who proscribed anti- biotics and a steroid spray for my nose. As of now I have full sinuses, ears which clog up, and tiredness. I can help my ears out by blowing my nose, but is usually makes a lot of popping noises and never fully restores my hearing.

Brief Answer:
Acute sinusitis...Need to take a course of potent antibiotics.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

I have gone through your query and understood your problems. I am of the opinion that you could be suffering from Acute sinusitis with Eustachian tube Salpingitis.

Do not worry! With appropriate care and medications this can be taken care of.

I need few clarifications from your end to make our management effective.
1. Apart from the Steroid spray and Antibiotics what other medicines did you take.
2. What was the antibiotic you took and for how long did u use so?
3. At present, do you have any phlegm/sputum coming out?

You would require following measures to start with:
1. Drink frequent sips of warm water.
2. Use xylometazoline nasal spray 3-4 times a day, followed by steam inhalation after 5 minutes.
3. Continue with steroid nasal spray.
4. A mucolytic such as bromhexine or ambroxol.
5. A broad spectrum antibiotic.
6. Avoid taking chilled food and beverages, smoking and coffee.
7. Avoid blowing the nose.

Hope this answers your query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.

I am currently 6 days into a 10 day antibiotic called cefuroxime axetil.

I took an over the counter decongestant for 4 days, then stopped when I went on the antibiotic. I started it again today.

No phlegm or sputum

Brief Answer:
Cefuroxime is a good antibiotic, you should continue with it

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for writing back

Cefuroxime is a good antibiotic and you can continue with it. Steroid nasal spray can also be continued. As you don't have phlegm, mucolytic is not required.

Use xylometazoline nasal spray to decongest the nose, followed by steam inhalation, at least 2 times in a day for 3-5 minutes.

Drink frequent sips of warm water and follow rest of the advice as mentioned in my earlier response. With these measures you should get better. If you do not get better even after completing the antibiotic course, then, you would require X-Ray of the paranasal sinuses.

Hope this clarifies your doubts. Wish you good health.
