What Causes Dry Cracked Skin On Penis, Redness And Bleeding From Urethra?

Question: My urethra is red & was bleeding a little. The skin on my penis is dry & cracked in some places. I wear an external catheter. Can I apply an antibiotic to the area?

Hi and thanks for the query,

From what you describe, I do not think you need an antibiotic because there are really no signs of an infection. I think we instead have a mechanical problem. You might have to check if the catheter you are using is the appropriate one especially if you had to change one lately.

Also, using an antiseptic to avoid infection and lubricating properly around the urethral area could be more helpful.

Discharge (pus) should warrant use of antibiotics after appropriate evaluation of your doctor. Cultures might be required at times before the antibiotics are prescribed. However, I am afraid if you really need them now. Proper catheter, antiseptics and lubricants, while you watch carefully are my advice for now.
