I had a two level lumbar fusion a year ago. My back was still hurting so I went back into the surgeon and he ordered a cat scan to see if my fusion took. It turns out that my back hasnt fused at all. I read online that the anabolic steroid, winstol, aids in bone growth stimulation. The surgeon said he is going to do another CAT scan in a few months and if the fusion hasn't took I may have to have the surgery redone. I would rather try every option available rather than go through that surgery again. I was hooked on pain meds because of chronic back pain for a few years. So I refuse to take any opiate painkillers. But I'm always in pain and its affecting every aspect of my life. I don't want to have surgery again because I can't take pain meds. I'm in graduate school and the pain is so bad that i cant function. I've been in chronic pain since i was 12 and I am 35 now. I'm getting really tired.

Brief Answer:
Surgery depends on stability.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Surgery consideration depends not only from complete fusion but also from stability. If spine is stable on imaging conservative management can be tried but if not surgery could be a necessary evil I fear.
Pain shouldn't be the only criteria for surgery cause it may originate not only from failed fusion but also other spinal levels or myofascial structures.
I don't know what you've tried for pain other than opioids. The obvious first choice are painkillers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Your doctor might prescribe also antidepressants like amitriptyline or muscle relaxants.
If those fail local injections of steroids and anesthetis can help.
Also accupuncture or TENS electrical stimulation is useful at times.
Physiotherapy is naturally a companion of all the above.
Anabolic steroids are not proven to be effective and have serious side effects.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
