Question : I am having stomach problems like dyspepsia , flautulence and abdominal bloating. The problem increases after food intake especially in the evening. I have to go to toilet 7-8 times a day, sometimes at midnight and essentially after dinner. Abdominal cramps and pain make my sleep difficult. Lot of gas after taking food. Any suggestions please?

I would like to add one more information to the information provided earlier. My problem significantly reduces after taking entero quinol, but resumes within 3-4 days after discontinuing the medicine.

One more thing. There is excessive intestinal mucus which makes my stool sticky and difficult to pass.

I have been taking laxatives for the past 20-25 years. I don't drink, smoke or chew tobacco. I do lot of physical exercise including 4 km morning walk.

Another relevant factor is that I was earlier suffering with hyper acidity. To address this problem I took omeprazole for 12-15 years. Ultimately I underwent surgery for hiatus hernia in the year 2013. My current problems aggravated thereafter. The surgeon says it has nothing to do with the surgery.

Brief Answer:
Dietary fibre intake has to be increased

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone very carefully through your query. Your problem seems to be due to gastritis or gastroesophageal reflux. Our gastrointestinal tract has a forward propulsive movment (peristalsis) that moves the food material forward as it is digested, absorbed and finally expelled as feces. If somehow this movement gets hampered, food along with the digestive juices would stagnate, stomach acid will reflux into the food pipe and on the other hand the bowel habits would not be proper. Degradation of undigested food in the intestines by the intestinal bacteria would lead to the excess gas formation.

In order to relieve yourself, you need to do the following:
* Avoid spicy food. Take small but frequent meals. Avoid long gaps between meals.
* Avoid alcohol intake (if it a part of your habit).
* Take Prilosec (omerazole) once daily before breakfast.
* Take plenty of green leafy vegetables as well as other sources of dietary fibers. Take fiber supplements like isabgol/psyllium husk or senna. Rather than taking laxatives, I would insist you to increase your dietary fibre intake.
* Regular morning walk and exercise to keep the bowel movements proper.
* If I had a patient like you I would perhaps have suggested Prodep 20 mg tablet once daily for at least 2 months (it may take time for the action to set in).
* I would not promote use of enteroquinol. Rather take curd or yogurt on daily basis. It contains beneficial bacteria and should help.

Hope that helps.

Let me know if I could hep further.

Should I take another course of normaxin for a month? It gives me partial relief. I have also been suggested simethicone. Pl. advise me.

Brief Answer:
You can take either as needed.

Detailed Answer:
You can take Normaxin as required. It is likely to provide relief. You can also take simethicone. Try them at will and see which works better for you. The following link will help you to understand the significance of taking normaxin.

Sorry to bother you again. Kindly suggest if normaxin and simethicone can be taken simultaneously. Should normaxin be taken before or after meals? How many times it needs to be taken? How long can this medicine be taken? Can this medicine be withdrawn at will or in phases? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
To be taken after meals.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. They can be taken simultaneously but I would prefer experimenting by taking one at a time and checking which seems to work better. Both are to be taken after meal. They are to be taken symptomatically and not as a routine medicine. No specific withdrawal process or restriction on the length of use.
