What Causes Ear Infection With Fever And Swelling In Eyes?
Question: Hi,
My daughter who is 3 years old weighing 20 kg, has been diagnosed with ear infection. She had high fever going up to 103.7, swollen red eyes and bad runny nose.
The doctor started her treatment on thursday and prescribed her following medicines:
1. Relent 6ml twice a day for 7 days
2. Clamp kid forte suspension - 5 ml twice a day for 7 days.
3. Nasonex nasal spray 2 puff twice a day for 7 days
4. Meftal P 8 ml if fever > 101 and Crocein DS 6 ml twice a day if fever > 99.6 and < 101
Till yesterday (after having antibiotics for 3 days) she was getting fever upto 103.7 thrice a day. We were giving her meftal p thrice a day.
Today is the 4th day of her antibiotics:
1. She didnt have very high fever today, It once crossed 102 in the morning and we had given crocein DS and since then she is fine
2. She is having bad running nose since last 4 days and no improvement. Every 2-3 minutes we need to wipe her nose. Once or twice we saw small trace of blood in the nose.
3. She coughed today and threw black cough with little trace of blood in the evening. I have attached a picture of your reference.
4. She had dark black stool in the evening.
5. Her teeth seems to have turned blackish in colour. I have attached a pic for your reference.
Pl. let me know:
1. Are these all side effects of the medicines she is taking ? What should I expect in next 3 days with the treatment
2. Is this any kind of emergency ? Do I need to talk to doctor immediately. I have my follow up visit on tuesday.
3. What precautions should I take from my side for an early recovery.

According to your description your daughter has AOM(ear infection). Treatment given for it is perfect.Fever has reduced.Its a sign of recovery.
But what is worrisome is bleeding.Bleeding from nose only is normal with URTI.But since you are saying that she is passing dark black stool ( called as malena in medical terms: which is because of blood ) and also coughed blood in expectoration I think you should immediately contact your doctor.
Children on iron supplements pass black stool and their teeth also turn black because of iron.But it develops gradually and not in one day.Have you started any iron supplements in last 7-8 days?
For recovery from ear infection ear should be kept dry.( I.e. no oil,water,ear drops to be used in ear )

We did not start any iron medication in last few days but I did gave her following yesterday and today along with other meals:
1. Beetroot + pomegranate + carrot juice
2. Spinach soup
3. Amla murabba
4. Zincovit syrup 5 ml once a day
She usually has a tendency to get the URTI and it seems to be the case, the way she is coughing. But in past I have never seen any traces of blood in her cough and nose.
Did you get a chance to look into the pics attached ? Could you suggest any reason for sudden blackening of teeth ?

Kindly look at her stools carefully. Whether it is dark red or black.Beet root is known to colour stool,urine.It looks like the cause if stool was dark red or brown. Give lots of water.If it is due to beet them it will clear within 24 hours.If they are dark black persistently then report it.
Teeth picture is not clearly visible.But teeth blackening of short duration occurs due to some pigments in food or iron.So for teeth part don't worry.If it persists then report to your doctor.
