What Causes Early Symptoms Of Menopause?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Jun 2015
Question: I am wondering what causes premature menopause (was one year menses free at age 39) in some women? My mother and sisters did not go through it early in fact my mother was 42 when I was born. I am also wondering if there are any health concerns I should be aware of because of my early menopause?

Brief Answer:
Can be premature ovarian failure.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The premature menopause can be caused by either ovarian failure or gonadotroph adenoma. We do the FSH and LH levels (leutinizing hormone) and in women with ovarian failure, both FSH and LH levels rise. In women with gonadotroph adenomas, FSH levels are usually high, but LH levels remain within reference ranges. So best is to get your FSH and LH levels done.

If premature ovarian failure is confirmed by the LH levels, then assessment for autoimmune disorders, including thyroid or adrenal disease, is important to be done. Testing may include TSH, antithyroid antibodies, morning serum cortisol, and ACTH evaluations, followed by an ACTH stimulation test.

Due to early menopause you can have early aging changes like osteoporosis.
