Posted on Mon, 2 Jun 2014
Question: Hello, I have been having electric shock sensations that are generalized. These case me to jerk involuntarily. It sometimes causes me to wake up at night. I have been dizzy having trouble with moving my eyes without feeling dizzy. I also have generalized tingling, almost pin prick sensations in my muscles. My joints also ache. I have strange muffled and ringing sounds in my ears. I have reported these symptoms to 2 different general practitioners without having an explanation for the cause. My symptoms were rather discounted. Can you give me some direction? Thank you

Brief Answer:
You need to do some tests.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!
I am Dr.Rovena and I read carefully your query.

Considering the symptoms you described I can think of four possibilities:
1)Electrolyte imbalance. The most serious electrolyte disturbances involve abnormalities in the levels of sodium, potassium, and calcium.
2)Deficit of Vitamin B12 and folic acid.
3)Neurological disorder.
4)Psychological cause due to stress.

I suggest to do some tests in order to sort out the right cause of these symptoms:
-Complete blood count to exclude an anemia caused by Vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency.
-Blood levels of Vitamin B12 and folic acid.
-Serum electrolyte estimation that include Potassium,Sodium and Calcium.

If these tests result normal then I suggest to consult a neurologist so he can exclude a neurological disorder after physical examination and specific tests.

If these possibilities are excludes by tests then is a possibility that these symptoms might be psychological due to stress. This can happen if you are a very sensitive person (if you get depressed very quickly) or if you have been experiencing stressful situations or problems in your life recently.
But this possibility can be taken in consideration only after have excluded pathological disorders.

Hope I was able to help you.If you have any other question please feel free to ask me.I will be happy to help.
Wish you good luck with your investigations.
