What Causes Elevated ALT And AST Levels?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Feb 2015
Question: Dear Doctor,
My liver function has been nornal over the past 4 years. A recently test shows both my ALT and AST slightly elevated. However, a few days before the test, I did take some high-fat and oily food at a banquet. It is possible that a single food intake can elevate the AST and ALT? as I always keep a healthy diet with low-fat food
thanks

Brief Answer:
Single oily food intake not a cause,if consumed alcohol,it might be a cause

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXX,

Thank you for your query.

A single intake of high-fat and oily food cannot elevate the AST and ALT. Continuous use of fatty foods over time can cause fatty liver with alteration of liver transaminases (LT).

I need to know if you have consume alcohol in that banket? If yes, that could explain slightly elevated LT.

I was reviewing your medica history and noted that you are taking Lipitor for over 11 years now. Alterations in LT are reported while using Lipitor.

If the changes in your LT were slightly noted, there is nothing worrisome. Just continue with your healthy diet and lifestyle regimen and repeat testing after 6 weeks.

All the best!
