What Causes Elevated ALT Levels After Gallbladder Surgery?

default
Posted on Mon, 11 Jan 2016
Question: I had gallbladder surgery two weeks ago. It was infected and full of stones. My liver enzymes were high and had to be taken out right then. Now two weeks later I went for labs follow up and my liver enzymes are out of range. Alt-100 als-41 I am now worried about hep c. Do you think it could be high from the surgery and just need more time? My alt was 129 in the Hosptial and now 100 so it is dropping some. Should I be worried??

Everything looks just fine.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing.

I am Dr.Muhammad Ahmad. I have read your question completely, i understand your concern and will try to help you in best way possible.

In my opinion you do not have to worry about hep C , Hep C does not show symptoms in 2 weeks it may take 10 years to show any change in ALt... if you still are worried you can get Hep C test done after 3 months of surgery.

Your AlT was raised due to liver cell damage because of gall stones, now as ALT is in downward trend it means things are getting better for you and everything seems to be getting back to normal.

I am quite positive that in 3..4 more weeks your liver profile will get back to normal, In my opinion there is nothing to worry , just drink good quantity or water, eat healthy food..take regular medication if your doctor recommended anything and everything should be fine.

I hope this answered your question, a
if you have more please feel free to ask.

Regrads.

Ok I wasn't worried about having hep c from surgery if I had hep c it would have been from a long time ago. I was just wondering if it is possible to still have raised levels after two weeks due to surgery. And wondering if I should be concerned of having hep c. Also can birth control raise liver enzymes? I was on it for two months and had horrible side effects during this time and just discounted itz

Brief Answer:
It takes time for the liver enzymes to wash out of your system.

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for writing back,

one can have hep C but usually such diseases are screened before surgery your doctor might have done it alreasy, if you still are concerned you can get a simple test done( HCV by elisa method) .

Birth control pills can cause liver damage but it is really rare.

You liver enzymes were high and now they are getting better with time... in two weeks they have gone down considerably, one wont expect them to get normal in 2 weeks it takes time for the liver to re generate its damaged cells, I would advise you not to worry and keep eating and living healthy, things are expected to get even better in the coming days.

You can get a test done after two more weeks and you will see a more positive change in your liver function. Things seem to be going just fine.

Regards.

Dr.Muhammad Ahmad.
