Question: Hello Doc! My father is 50 years old. He took Master Health Check Up two days back. All results are normal and within the range, except for the HDL and LDL Levels who are beyond the normal range. And the total cholesterol level is 215 mg/dL. I've attached the report for your reference. Please go through it and tell me your valuable suggestions (diet and exercise) to bring down the cholesterol below 200 mg/dL. Also give me your views about the report. Here are some of his diet and physic details

Weight: 54 Kgs
Height : 5 ft 6 in
Diet Habits: Mostly Veg. Consumes meat weekly once or twice. Drinks 500 ml of Beer daily
Smoking: Nil

Brief Answer:
All is fine with his report

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX I do understand your concern for your father. I would like you be reassured that your father is fit and even if he continue the life style and he is presently on he would be just fine, as a doctor saying this may sound odd, but that's the truth.
1) his weight is just fine for his height, however 30-45 mins of aerobic exercise a day atleast 5 days a week should be started
2) now the total cholesterol is just borderline high, and so no medication should be offered at present
HdL is the good cholesterol so higher it is better. 62 is a very good number to have.
Ldl is the bad cholesterol we should try bringing it down to less than 100 for him. Avoid red meat, egg yellow, cut down oil in his food, may replace it with healthy alternative like olive oil. No fried stuff. Out of his two meat meals, one consisting of fish like salmon would be good. Flax seeds are a very good source in vegetarian for omega acids. Also if possible supplement like omega 3 fatty acid capsule 1-2 gm s per day may help.
3)the kidney, liver, hemoglobin is all good.
Also in terms of heart a echo and stress test should be done, for his age add a S. PSA for prostate the next time.
Any further question, I will be happy to help.
