What Causes Elevated Body Temperature While Having Viral Respiratory Infection?

default
Posted on Mon, 18 Jan 2016
Question: Qi have had a respiratory viral infection for two weeks which provoked acute asthma bronchospasms. I was treated in the ER And am on several meds: Prednisone, Pro Air, Advair, virtissun cough syrup, fluticasone nasal spray. I am better, but still coughing. NO FEVER NO COLORED SECRETIONS BUT BELOW NORMAL
BODY TEMPERATION ( 97.1). Is that temp part of the viral condition or reaction to the Prednisone ? Should I be concerned? Can I do anything to warm up?

Brief Answer:
it is typical of viral infections

Detailed Answer:
Hello and I am sorry that you are not feeling well.
It sounds like you got appropriate treatments. It is common for people with viral infections to have a slightly subnormal temperature and you do not need to do anything to warm up. If you develop an elevated temperature then it may be a sign that you have gotten a superimposed bacterial infection and in that case you would need to see a doctor again.
You do not need to be concerned about the low temperature. It is also common for the cough to persist for weeks even after the infection clears up. Push fluids and get plenty of rest.
I hope you are feeling better soon,
Regards

Thank you. The Virtussun helps with the cough and I am taking it only 2-3 times a day now instead of every four hours. Also, of course, I seem to need it at night. My question is that The Rx was from the ER and there is NO REFILL ON IT. I'd like to get another bottle if it is appropriate to continue to take it. What should I do to get a refill?
My other question is: in the ER THEY GAVE ME 60 mg of Prednisone. Then when I filled the Rx I guess they gave me enough for 10 days. However, I called the ER -and asked if I should take another 60 mg for that day and if I should count it as day one, or what, since I already had been given 60 mg. the ER nurse said "NO" just let that dose count for day one. OK. BUT NOW on the gradually reducing schedule, I will have pills for longer than the 10 days of the reducing doses. What do I do? Just keep taking the 1/2 pill left over for another 3 days, or not? I appreciate your response.

Brief Answer:
refills and prednisone

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for the follow up
It would be better to get off the virtussin if you can and just take an over the counter cough syrup. If you feel that you need the virtussin you will need to see at doctor for an evaluation and to get another prescription. The emergency department does not give refills. They want you to see your regular doctor if you need follow up.
As far as the prednisone goes just keep taking the half pill until you run out. That will help also with the continued coughing.
I hope you are feeling better soon.
