                                    Brief Answer:
Enlarged kidneys may be due to infection, glomerulonephritis, alcoholism etc
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Bulky kidneys(enlarged kidneys)may be found in many conditions like infection, glomerulonephritis, alcoholism, cysts, hydronephrosis etc. This need proper clinical evaluation and investigations.
It may also be due to normal anatomical variation.
If renal functions (including serum urea, creatinine)are normal then it is not a matter of concern and your father may not require any treatment.
Multiple cortical cysts are generally developmental and it is found in some persons with aging. It is also not a matter of concern.

Hope I have answered your query.

                                    Hello Doc,
Thanks for the swift reply. I would also like to know weather the "multiple cortical cyst" present in the kidney is causing the bulky Kidney. Is there any conditions arising out of this?
In order to know the reason for the bulky kidney, what are the kinds of test I have to undergo.
In case of multiple cortical cysts, what is the reason for the this condition and what are the treatment ? If any that has to be taken. and what can be the maximum size of the cyst. Weather it should be removed from any surgical methods or is it ok if my dad can take any medications for it.
Thanking You

                                    Brief Answer:
Simple cortical cyst usually doesn't require any treatment.
Detailed Answer:
Hello
Conventionally length of kidneys are measured longitudinally from upper pole to lower pole.Cortical cysts are generally not included during measurement of kidneys as it doesn't involve kidneys uniformly.
Exact cause for simple cortical kidney cysts is not known. One theory suggests that out pouch is first formed then it is filled with fluid leading to cyst formation.
Size of cyst may vary from mm to several cms.
Your father need routine investigations and it includes routine hemogram, urine RE/ME.Renal function test should also be done to assess kidney functions.
If these investigations are fine then he may not require any treatment.
Simple cortical cysts is commonly found with aging and usually it doesn't require any treatment.
