What Causes Episodes Of Strokes Causing Numbness Of Right Eye?

Posted on Wed, 11 Jun 2014
Question: I have had several episodes of what appears to be a stroke-right side goes completely numb, right eye doesn't track. MRI doesn't show a bleed but it does show an increase in white matter disease. I have been having these symptoms for almost 7 years. I will have an episode, spend a few days in hospital and all I am told is what it isn't. I want, no need, to find out what the heck is going on! The neurologist all agree that I am having some type of neurologic spell , they just can't put any type of name on it

Brief Answer:
Possibly TIA

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms.

The most likely diagnosis is transient ischemic attack (TIA). This is a type of minor brain stroke and MRI may be normal (without acute infarct changes) in 50% cases.

You should be on aspirin and statins to prevent recurrences (if not already on).

I was told by a neurologist that it was not a TIA because I took over 36 hours for symptoms to begin subsiding. And even after I had use of my right side I had some weakness and severe lethargy.

As of now I can not walk through my local grocery store. Unless I take a nap, I will not drive between 3-6 pm as that is the time I am VERY tired.
I have been told that it was not a TIA because symptoms didn't subside in 24 hours. I have also been told it isn't Lupus or MS. The doctors are in agreement that I had SOME kind of neurological issue-just didn't know WHAT kind. What else could I look at as this has taken a toll on my life. There are a lot of things that I can no longer do-I have 3 teenagers that are very active.

I have extreme weakness on my right side, lethargy and some mental "fog" that has persisted since the most recent episode in February.

Brief Answer:
It is still vascular.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back and providing more information.

I agree with you that if the recovery did not happen in 24 hours, we can not classify it as TIA. However, the episodes are still most likely to be vascular- due to reduction of blood supply to a part of brain.

Technically, these episodes would be called RIND- reversible ischemic neurological deficit. In RIND, recovery occurs within 24 hours to 7 days.

There is no other neurological condition, where MRI would be normal in association of symptoms such as yours (these include MS, vasculitis, infection, tumor, etc). So, these conditions should not be considered in your case.

I hope it helps.

Best wishes,
