What Causes Erectile Dysfunction?

Question: I am a 24yr old guy.I have been doing gymming since highschool.I have been taking supplements like whey isolate and soya isolate from past 2-3yrs.I always had full erections.But from a past 1-2yrs i have been going through a ridiculous situation.Sometimes i get full erection even when I am not thinking about sex and sometimes I couldnt get even when I want to.I want to know if this is normal and if not what measures needs to be taken.Please help.

Important aspects of your query are: • 24 year old male • On health supplement for 2-3 years. • Complaints of: Erectile dysfunction in-spite presence of normal spontaneous erection for 1-2 years. In treatment Erectile dysfunction (ED) first step is to identify cause of the problem. Erectile dysfunction can be a result of a psychological or physical problem. Psychological causes: Most common cause in young patients. These include performance anxiety, stress, and the effects of a past sexual and emotional trauma. Men with psychological problem usually have normal spontaneous erection, nocturnal erections and erections upon awakening (like in your case), whereas men with physical problem often do not. Physical causes: Include neurological disorders, alcoholism, smoking, hormonal imbalances, diabetes, hypertension, blood vessel disease and chronic diseases. If I see your case, your problem started after use of health supplement (irrespective of type of health supplement). I have many patients who develop different type of sexual problem after health supplements use. I doubt, health supplements contain stimulants (which increases stress and performance anxiety) and hormonal substance (which lead to hormonal imbalance). Both these factors can lead to erectile dysfunction, like in your case. Following measures will help you to reduce your suffering and improve erection: -Stop health supplement use. For muscle building eat healthy diet rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants like: fruits, milk and eggs -Quit smoking and alcohol (if you are taking any) -Have faith in yourself and do not take any stress. -Exercise, particularly aerobic exercise (like: Jogging, skipping and cycling) daily. It will increase blood flow all over body and will reduce stress. If you will follow all these steps, I believe that your problem will solve in 1-2 months. Is this a major issue?Do i need to be more concerned about this and get any tests? Also,i get normal erections not just while awakening,even normally during the day.But a few times it has happened over past 2years and I am concerned about that.You might be right,about it being psychological,because i want it but i am not in mood of sex.Earlier whenever i used to watch porn i used to get erections within no time and now,somtimes i dont get it all.. Could it be because i watch too much porn sometimes or I am not in mood even if I am watching it? Does it also depends on the way I mastuburate? Also,is there any particular limit on the times a person can get erection in a day? As,you have mentioned about stop taking health supplements.I want to stay fit as well as look good.As, I have been doing gymming since such a long time(especially weight training and cardio),I have gained muscles which I loose when I stop taking health supplements for a long time.(like 6months) And I have suffered from the erection problem when I have left exercises and supplements for a long time.Is there any connection between these three? As these supplements are high protein supplements what other sources of protein do u recommend to fulfill high protein requirement in my diet?

Ans: Yes it is a major issue, specially if you do not get well inspite of following above mentioned steps. Following blood investigations will help to rule out medical causes: -Fasting blood sugar -Complete blood count -Lipid profile -Hormone test: serum total testosterone, T3/T4/TSH (for thyroid) and prolactine level. You can review me after the test reports. Also,i get normal erections not just while awakening,even normally during the day.But a few times it has happened over past 2years and I am concerned about that.You might be right,about it being psychological,because i want it but i am not in mood of sex.Earlier whenever i used to watch porn i used to get erections within no time and now,somtimes i dont get it all..
