What Causes Excessive Belching?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Oct 2014
Question: I have very excessive belching despite taking medication (prescription and otc)
Know I have gallstones, but no pain and nothing showed up on ultrasound or upper gi series to indicate gall bladder problems.
This has been going on daily for over two months, Most days it is almost nonstop. No food or drink seems to make it better or worse. After laying down for a few minutes it sometimes gets a little better.
What should I do from here as I now keep a sore throat and my voice gets very hoarse.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns.

I would like to ask some more questions related to your belching like abdominal pain or nausea.

Root cause for belching is hiatus hernia. you need to follow some instructions.

some donts -

Avoid Beans and lentils, dairy products containing lactose fructose and sorbitol, which are found in some fruits.

Avoid carbonated beverages or eating gassy foods. Avoid eating too quickly, drinking through a straw, chewing gum or sucking on candies, resulting in swallowing air, stress or anxiety, smoking, avoid fatty foods.

some dos-

lying on side, adopting knee to chest position till the gas passes.
eating each meal slowly, take probiotics like curd.

Related to your hoarse voice and and sore throat, it is common in excessive gastric reflex, where acid contents damages the mucosal lining of vocal cards leading into hoarse voice. Other than you routine medication , you can try slightly elevated posture during sleep to prevent back flow of gatric contents.take 6 small meals instead of large 3 meals.

I suggest you to to consult ENT surgeon and get detailed ENT examination, laryngoscopy to know the status of vocal cards.

I advise you to continue same medication till you go for surgical repair for hiatus hernia.if possible you can do steam inhalation.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

I do not have abdominal pain or nausea.
The only thing on the don't list that I do is use a "vape" trying to quit smoking.
I already do all the do list.
A friend told me she had a lot of the same problems with no resolution until they ran a special scan to test gallbladder function and found hers was not working. Would that test show anything that does not show up on ultrasound or barium swallow upper gi series. My surgeon assures me the hiatus hernia.
Please advise if you think this other scan might be helpful in addition to seeing an ENT.

Hi,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

Vape training can also aerophagia(swallowing air) can cause belching.please stop both smoking and vape.

Coming to gall bladder disease. i dont think you have that, your symptoms are not suggesting (it shows with abdominal pain, nausea, alternate constipation with diarrohea and fatty stools.

Some times, where gallstones are not detectable through ultrasound, ERCP (Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) or MRI OR CT SCAN can be done.

In my opinion, your treating doctor will take final call related to these investigations.Kindly discuss with your surgeon.
