Question: Hi, i have removed mirena iud just 1 week back.Right after 3rd day onwards i am very much bleeding.i dont know whether it is bleeding after iud removal or period bleeding.. but today i am noticing some blood clots also.. in half day i have changed 4 pads...:( when i have inserted iud for 1st time,i had severe bleeding for 3-4 months.. but it was reduced later. and then my periods were irregular and very small amount of period bleeding.. i was not satisfy with this iud because of irregular periods and spotting.. and i used be depress some times.. so i have removed this shit after a year.. i dont want to go for any birth control options in future.. i am tired of bleeeding issues.. Please let me know, after removing mirena iud is it normal to have heavy bleeding and blood clots? if it is.. how much and how long? are their any complications after removing this iud.. i just want to know whether it is period blleding or any other? what i should do? Thanks in advance..

Brief Answer: I am cocerned Detailed Answer: Since your bleeding was light while the IUD was in place for a year, and only one week has passed, I don't think this bleeding is because of a period. it is to soon for IUD effect to be reversed. I think it's time to talk to the clinic who provided the removal. If the uterus is tender, antibiotics may be needed, but I'd like you to be examined and make sure there wasn't a a tear in the cervix when the IUD was removed. It's not likely but needs to be checked with a quick exam. I hope everything settles down for you.

Thanks for the valuable reply.. i have one doubt, if its tear in the cervix when the IUD is removed..i did not bleed right after removal.. bleeding started approximately after 2 days of the removal.. my question is if it is teared,i should bleed right after romoval or any day bleeding can start? i have taken appointment tomorrow with my gynic.. also please let me know what kind queries i should ask her? Regards, jp.

Brief Answer: I misunderstood. Detailed Answer: I thought bleeding started at the time of removal. So if there was a 2 day delay then likely not a tear. Your GYN will likely consider infection and may prescribe antibiotics. What ever she decides to do, you should feel you understand why and how soon to come back if not working. I would ask her when she would be concerned. If your periods were regular before Mirena or other hormones they should return to normal quickly. Regards

Hi Doctor, I visited my Gyn today morning.. She checked everything..now i am ralaxed with her feedback.. their is no tear or tender cervix. and no infection also. she said everything looks good.. no need of antibiotics now.. she mentioned that its not a period bleeding.. But to reduce the flow and settles down the bleeding, she prescribed me these medicines below. 1) medroxyprogesterone 10mg tablets(take 1 tablet by mouth once a day, total 21 tablets) 2) estradiol 2mg tablets (take 2 tablets every 6 hrs - first dose right away) after finishing estradiol 2mg tablets within 2 days i shuould take below tablet 3)estradiol 1mg tablets (take 1 tablet once a day for 21 days) Also she said, my periods will be adjust within some months.. Hope everything will be settles down soon.. Please let me know i am into right process now? what these medicines do? Thanks allot for giving time.. Regards, Jp

Brief Answer: So glad no tear or infection. Detailed Answer: The meds she has prescribed are similar to what your ovaries make in a natural cycle. the initial estrogen will work, but if nauseous from the high dose, you can use less though it will take longer to stop bleeding. Estrogen (estradiol)thickens and stabilizes the lining. You might consider delaying the medroxyprogesterone until bleeding stops and then a few days ( 7-10) from staring the estadiol. it will mature the lining so it sheds completely. Mirena gave you plenty of another progestin in the IUD. In my experience if you are taking it 21 days you can take the gentler dose of 5 mg. (1/2 tab). I know it is confusing to get different advice from different 'experts'. You won't do any harm either way. i tended to use a little lighter touch when I practiced. the medroxyprogesterone and IUD counteract estrogen. my thinking is by waiting a little bit to start it estrogen can stop the bleeding faster but you will be fine either way.
