Question : Hello Doctor,
How are you doing? It's been a long time since I wrote to you. I am at 6th month now. Just completed the anomaly scan last week. The Dr told everything is normal.
- But I keep getting a complaint as I am putting on 2-3 kgs every month and Dr is literally scaring me about this. But to be XXXXXXX I am not at all eating like other pregnant women. I don't eat junk, fried items, cookies, sweets etc., but how am I gaining weight is shocking.
- Dr, also told as the baby weight should be between 500 games during anomaly scan, but my baby is 540 kms. So, Dr is telling if I keep gaining like this, it would be difficult for a normal delivery to happen.
- Please help me to understand how much I should gain every month? And also please suggest me what type of exercises needs to be done now? My height is 168 cm and weight is 78 now.
- I am having a severe pain on the left side of the back exactly at the mid of the back and on the ribs at the same place (left side). Due to this I am unable to sit, stand or even sleep. My Dr just told to take Dali 650 for the pain. Please help me with this.
- Dr told I would feel the baby movement from last week. I am not exactly getting what is the movement. But I am feeling a small several taps in the lower abdomen. Is it the baby kick or how exactly the baby moves?
- My Hb is low and it is 9.5, Dr did not worry much about it. She just told to have an apple a day. Do this impacts on baby growth? Or is it responsible for my back pain? Please suggest me to improve the Hb level.

Thanks in Advance, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Excessive weight gain is not desirable.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The weight gain during pregnancy can be due to water retention and the hormonal changes. It is not entirely dependent on the diet. Usually a total of 10 kgs of eight is gained during pregnancy out of which in last 3-4 months, 1.5 kg weight is gained every month.
Excessive weight gain can predispose you to complications like diabetes and hypertension during pregnancy. You can decrease your salt, sugar and fat intake to restrict the weight gain.
There is no need to start a new exercise but brisk walking for 20 minutes daily will help.
The pain in the back is mostly posture related. You can improvise your posture and take calcium supplements along with the pain killer for relief.
The baby movement initially is felt like a small tap only. It will gradually become more forceful.
You need to start with proper iron supplements to improve the Hb levels. Do get these prescribed from your gynecologist.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
Regards.

Brief Answer:
Details below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
1. Retention means retaining of water by body. It is not a disease- it is a physiological process- no symptoms. No treatment needed as it will subside after delivery.
2. It can be due to inadequate calcium supplements. Do get at least 1000mg of calcium supplements daily with vitamin D3 with dietary calcium in the form of milk and eggs. Do check for appropriate posture with a physiotherapist.
3. In addition to green leafy vegetables, you need at least 66mg of iron supplements in form of capsules daily. Taking apple only is not sufficient.
4. Since you are pregnant, it is not the right time to reduce the weight. The walk is to keep the body active and not to reduce weight. Do plan for it after delivery.
5. You can have few strands of kesar with milk during any time of pregnancy.
6. You are in the sixth month of pregnancy.
7. No. It can cause lower abdomen pain.
8. Yes.
Hope my answer is helpful.
