Posted on Thu, 4 Aug 2016
Question: I am a 75 year old male who swims 3 or 4 times a week for about 1 hour. I enjoy the exercise and fitness it brings. I have no chest pain nor do I experience fatigue. I do have a leaking heart valve problem (moderate) mitral valve regurgitation moderate. Recently I have developed swollen ankles (moderate) with no pain Should I continue to swim as I enjoy it very much?

Brief Answer:
Treatment should be started

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to HCM, I understand your concern. Thank you for your question.

It is a good thing that you are kept on periodical echo cardiograms to evaluate if the moderate mitral regurgitation is progressing or not. I do not think that you should withhold swimming, but I surely think that you should at least halve the effort your exert or time your spend swimming. Also, since the regurgitation of the blood is present, and this means that systemic pressures are raised, hence the ankles are swollen, I would recommend you to be started on a diuretic, such as furosemide, at least twice a day. I would, however, recommend you to withhold swimming until the swollen ankles are gone under therapy. It is only then, when you can restart swimming with the above mentioned recommendations.

I hope I was helpful with my answer. I am happy to help, if you have follow-up questions.

Best regards,
Dr. Meriton
