Question: Symptoms...soft unformed stools, fatigue, poor sleep, mild psoriasis....in a relatively fit active 60 year old woman who eats a very healthy diet, has an adequate water consumption,, avoids gluten, dairy and junk food and tries to maintain a positive attitude. I traveled through Asia for 4 months last winter but have no abdominal pain or discomfort associated with the constant formless feces. ( usually just once a day, shortly after waking)

Brief Answer:
Possible parasitic infection... a stool examination would be a good idea...

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for your question.
It is possible that you picked up a parasite on your travels.
It would be a good idea to see a doctor and have stool samples examined for stool culture and for ova and parasites. Your diet sounds very healthy.

I think it is important to go ahead and take the probiotics, even though they did not solve the problem, until this gets sorted out.

If you develop pain, fevers or worsening diarrhea, then you should be seen immediately.

Good luck to you on having this figured out and treated.

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX
Thanks for your reply. I guess that's the reason I mentioned my travels as I suspected a parasite could be the problem. The runny stools didn't begin until about 4 months after I returned from Asia though. I'm away from home now but will get my doctor to give me a specimen kit when I return next week. I want to clear this up before I embark on my South XXXXXXX adventure this winter.
Any other ideas if it comes up negative? Suspected Celiac but there'd be cramping and pain....Could my diet be too healthy? too much roughage.. XXXXXXX smoothies, chia seeds etc?
I'm trying a 'leaky gut' protocol to address the Psoriasis which I know is food related as the only time it cleared up completely was when I fasted.I've had it for about 10 years but it's only on one shin and is not a huge concern, just super itchy.
Thanks again and I hope you're right as it should be a quick fix if there's something in there.
Cheers,
Simmie

Brief Answer:
Could be roughage

Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for your reply.

If it is not a parasitic or other intestinal infection, then it is possible that your diet just has so much healthy fiber that your stools are loose. This is not necessarily a problem. You are right that there should be more symptoms if it were celiac disease (or lactose intolerance) but it sounds like you avoid dairy and gluten anyway.

Happy travels and good health to you.
