What Causes Fecal Incontinence After Rectal Cancer Recovery?

Question: Yes. My son was diagnosed with rectal cancer one year ago. The doctors successfully got rid of the cancer! He had the bag removed in November. Since that time he's had extreme difficulty with controlling bowel movements. He tried to return to work but again is on full disability. He has a positive outlook and perhaps too much so. He does not seem to tell the doctors how bad the situation is at times. I stayed with him throughout his stay in the hospital (longer than normal because he had some difficulties). He now has C-Diff! The flagyl did not work, so they gave him a different anti-biotic. Then changed that. Now he is back on flagyl. My son is so sore in the bum that he bleeds and at times must sit in a warm bath to soothe the area. He is to see an infectious disease doctor tomorrow but my cursory research shows that the doctor only does Lyme Disease and patients say to stay away from this doctor! Do you have advice on probiotics or other such possibilities to boost his immune system? Both my husband and I volunteer at Johns XXXXXXX and we have several doctor friends who would be happy to help us but my son will not come here from XXXXXXX Can you help?
I am pleased that you have this add-on feature! My son's wife works and his three sons are away at school, and I am concerned that his eating habits are not quite the best. He tries very very hard, but sometimes cannot resist eating what I fear he shouldn't. Do you have readily accessed lists of Yes and No foods? Thank you!!!

Brief Answer:
Stop all medicines including Flagyl for a while and get his stool test done

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ma'am
Welcome to health care magic, I really appreciate your concern for your son.

I would advise you not to take too much pills especially antibiotics which can lead to antibiotic resistance and offending infective agent becomes difficult to treat.

I would advise him to take lots of fluids like ORS, fruit juices and fresh fruits as well to maintain good hydration and counter electrolytes imbalances.

Probiotics will definitely help him as it enhances healthy colonic bacteria and boosts up intestinal immunity.

Meanwhile Put more emphasis on healthy dietary habits, good hygiene and sanitation and get his stool test done for ova, cyst or protozoa and according to reports a course of antibiotics under medical supervision is recommended.

Curd/yogurt will also add on to rapid healing so it is advisable. Dietary fiber like ishabgol husk at bed time, fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grain diet will also help

Give him antiacidity medicine like ranitidine or pantoprazole for 3-5 days.

Hope this answers your question, please feel free to ask for further clarification I will be happy help you.
Regards
