Question: Yes Hi. I had a hysterectomy in 2006 to remove my fibroids but I would like to know if they can come back- I appear to have a lump in my abdomen that I can push inwards. It hurts a little when I push it but then I forget about it. I kept my ovaries, but I presume I have gone through the menopause now! I am 54
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Fibroids do not recur after hysterectomy usually.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

The fibroid tumors originate from the muscle cells in the uterine wall and once the uterus is removed through hysterectomy, the causative cells are gone and recurrences are not possible.

Yet, you should be aware of the fact that it is still possible to have masses from other pelvic organs. I would ask you to get a pelvic examination by a gynecologist and if necessary by a surgeon to identify the mass and get proper treatment. You should also have a pelvic/trans-vaginal sonogram. A painless lump anywhere should never be ignored.

Ovaries usually regress in size as they atrophy after menopause. Whether you have attained menopause can be known through hormonal study.

Hope your query has been answered. Please feel free to contact for further clarifications. I will be happy to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.
