What Causes Fever, Abdominal Pain And Vomiting When Diagnosed With Mononucleosis?

Posted on Mon, 13 Feb 2017
Question: My grandson was recently diagnosed with mono. He woke having trouble breathing (SOB). He can't stop vomiting and he says it's hard to describe the vomit - not liquid but chunks of stuff. Has severe pain in abdominal and radiates to back. And last night he was running a high fever. Did his spleen rupture?

Brief Answer:
Emergency evaluation with Ultrasound or CT scan

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Would like to know if he alcoholic or smokes?

It sounds as if he needs immediate evaluation of the abdomen. We call it acute abdomen. It can be gastritis which is simple and easily curable but we need to think of serious reasons for his vomits and pain. Ibuprofen is a common drug that can cause gastritis.

So please its imperative to ask for an examination coupled with Ultrasound of the abdomen or CT scan as the examination says. I cannot comment on his spleen rupture as it is very uncommon. Mono can increase the size of the liver but rarely ruptures because of mono alone.
