Question: Hi, my XXXX is 2.5 months old. He had his rotavirus vaccination two weeks back. After a day he got fever and starting pooping 4 to 5 times a day. It turned into yellow watery and looked like diarrhoea. My led asked me to give him probiotics for 3 days, after which the watery poop stopped but now he has greenish mucus poop 4 to 5 times a day. He wants to nurse every 1 hour and looks very unsettled, he has gas whenever he poops. Sometimes it is frothy and very watery. Before vaccination he pooped 2 times a day and it was normal. Please help, it has been two weeks and he has gained only 200 grams weight. I am little worried

Brief Answer:
watch for signs of dehydration and get a stool test done

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

Having fever and diarrhea on the very next day of Rotavirus vaccination may be just a coincidence.
Fever with loose stool in this age is mostly due to some viral infection. As you have mentioned that the frequency and consistency of stool has improved.
The Green color stool can be there during the recovery period. This green color is due to increased motility of intestine.Due to increased motility the pigments which are responsible for normal yellowish color of stool is not adequately formed. The increase formation of gas can be due to inadequate absorption of lactose.
Due to loss of fluid from the body demand for feed increases and that is a good sign.
Give him frequent feed. You may also give ORS if the feed in insufficient.
The main aim of management is to give frequent feed to prevent dehydration.Antibiotic is needed only if stool test suggests bacterial infection.
Probiotic and Zinc helps in early recovery.
I won't get worried if baby is active, playful, accepting feeds well and passing urine normally.
Continue giving probiotic, zinc and plenty of fluids.
Be watchful for any signs of dehydration and get a stool test done to check any bacterial infection.
It may take 6-8 days for the stool to get its normal pattern.

I hope this helps
