What Causes Fever, Body Pain And Sore Throat After Unprotected Intercourse?

Question: Hi Doc ,

I am really worried after reading online... About 4-5 weeks ago I used ( with I have been using ocassionally now for 12 months ) & I had unprotected sex with a girl with I never do usually!

About 7 days I used meth again this time not having any unprotected sex , however I did not sleep for 3 days! On the 4th night I started feeling a fever coming on body was aching , also my throat was very sore I could not swallow! I was in a fever all night long & next day to cold sweats...

I went to doctor next morning who said I had tonsils infected ( which I have had a couple of times in past ). She gave me penicillin . Which iv been taking for 2 days and a noticeable improvement has started I'm getting better . However I am really worried that I may have HIV? As I saw the symptoms & they match mine exactly , I have for some weeks been tired in the morning not being able to get up ( although this has been a thing for many many months ). However even at the back of my neck I get this purple pimple like lump that comes and then goes away ... I also got a bad cold sore about 4 weeks ago .. & ulcers in the mouth? But Thats usually after meth use? I'm worried ?

Brief Answer:
get HIV testing

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.

Unfortunately meth and other drugs can make you more likely to do dangerous things like having unprotected sex. You need to make sure that your doctor tests you for sexually transmitted infections including HIV, hepatitis B and C, gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphilis. The HIV test needs to be repeated in 3 months even if it is negative. The symptoms of HIV are not specific, those symptoms can come from many bacterial or viral infections. Your risk of getting HIV after a single possible exposure is low. However, it is important that you try not to use the meth (it may cause many serious medical problems) and to see your doctor as soon as possible for complete testing.

Good luck to you.

Hi Doc ,

If I used meth yesterday how long should I wait before going for a HIV blood test? Is there a set time or not?

Also will the fact that iv been taking penicillin affect the results ?

And how long after one is affected can HIV be detected?? If the first test is negative is that pretty conclusive usually?

Brief Answer:
Get tested soon

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
You need HIV testing now and again in 3 months to make sure you are negative. recent meth use and antibiotics will not interfere with the testing.
