Question : I got sick this past weekend, spent the Christmas Day at the ER. I'm a very healthy 46 y/o male with normal BP and no meds. Symtoms include, fever, chills, diahriha but most concerning is a violent harsh cough where I get very dizzy and my body tingles. This last only a few seconds. They did a chest X-ray, nothing there, EKG which the nurse said 100%. They gave me no meds or IV, ER Doc said I had a bad case of post nasal drip and advised me to continue taking over the counter meds. The dizziness really concerns me the dizziness is so bad I lose control and can't function .......advise please

Brief Answer:
Need to prevent dehydration and also suppress the cough to find relief

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I am sorry to hear about your current situation sir, and here are a few of my views:

+The dizziness can be brought about by the cough which can increase intracranial pressure and result in pressure on the a nerve resulting in balance issues
+The other cause for the dizziness could be dehydration as a result of the ongoing diarrhoea

My advice would thus be:

1. Drink plenty of fluids and speak to your doctor to help control the diarrhoea
2. Initiate an oral rehydration solution to help deal with lost electrolytes and also to provide you with energy
3. Purchase any anti-tussive or cough syrup along with an anti-histamine to help suppress the cough which should in turn provide some amount of relief from the dizziness
4. Only if the dizziness lasts longer than it should, speak to your doctor about the initiation of a small dose betahistine medication

I hope the doctors in the ER made sure you do not require antibiotics, I have mentioned this because you have a fever, and this should raise suspicion for an infection, which may require antibiotic coverage if of bacterial source.

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
