default
Posted on Wed, 24 Aug 2016
Question: For the last two years I have allergy. In every winter season in the month of Dec and XXXXXXX a swear kind of Flu started and watering eyes with sneezing, itching in eyes. I went to Allergist specialist and after different kinds of tests doctor told me that you have Grass, Dust, Pollan allergy. Almost I took vaccination (injection) for atleast 8 months. Why Flu started only in two months of Winter season. If I have dust allery and grass allery then it should also attack in the summer as well. I remain very good in summer. Please tell what should I do now

Brief Answer:
Cold weather and viral infection are more in winters.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
In winters, due to cold weather and more frequent viral infection, underlying allergy can flare up more.
Viruses are liking cold weather (winters). They survive more in winters this is the reason why viral infection is more common in winters.
This infection worsens allergic inflammation and gives more symptoms.
I have gone through the prescription you have attached.
You are taking desloratidine (antihistamine). Instead of this, fexofenadine is more useful and should be started in your case.
You are also not taking montelukast (anti allergic).
So you should take combination of antihistamine (fexofenadine) and anti allergic (montelukast).
This will give you more symptomatic relief .
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic
I can understand your concern.
Yes, the prescription you have attached is having steroid. First drug is steroid.
Yes, you are right. Oral steroids if taken for more than 1 month can cause serious side effects.
So better not to take oral steroid.
Inhaled steroids are more beneficial and less harmful as compare to oral steroid. So steroid containing nasal spray is more beneficial in your case.

Brief Answer:
You should start treatment 1 week before starting of winter.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Healthcare Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Best way to deal with seasonal allergy is to start treatment 1-2 weeks before season starts and continue till season ends.
So start combination of fexofenadine and montelukast, fluticasone nasal spray 1-2 weeks prior to winters and continue till winter ends.
Drink plenty of fluids orally and keep your self hydrated in winters.
Do warm water gargles 5-6 times a day in winters.
Don't worry, you will be alright with all these.
Hope I have solved your query.
