What Causes Flu-like Symptoms And Severe Diarrhoea?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Nov 2015
Question: 3 weeks ago I started to get flu-like symptoms (aches, shivery, feeling hot), shortly afterwards I got bad diarrhoea that lasted 24 hours. The flu-like symptoms continued for 18 days and I did not feel well enough to go out. Yesterday, I started to feel better and thought the flu (virus?) had passed. Then this morning I woke up with bad diarrhoea again and full blown flu-like symptoms again. What is going on? Can you help me to understand this? I should also let you know I have low grade MS and type 2 diabetes.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Viral or bacterial gastroenteritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query at HCM.
I understand your concern and situation.

As per history it appears that you are having viral or bacterial gastroenteritis. I would suggest you to get stool routine microscopy examination and culture sensitivity testing done. Based on results if pus cells are present you might require antibiotics like oflox ornidazole. I advise you to drink plenty of water and oral rehydration solution and keep yourself hydrated. If viral it is self limiting and resolve in a week. Eat bland diet and take probiotic once daily for 3-4 days.

Thank you for this information. I have been taking a probiotic every day for about the last 2 months. Would this have any impact? Also, a key concern is the length of time this has gone on. Is 3 weeks unusual for this type of disorder? Is it common for this disorder to run for 10 days, then stop, then start again worse than before?

Thank you
