What Causes Fluctuating Body Weight During Pregnancy When Diagnosed With Gestational Diabetes?

Posted on Fri, 10 Jul 2015
Question: I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes a week ago. I have been eating perfectly with the help of a dietician for a solid week. My levels have been in the lower side of normal. The first 2 days I lost a lb. Then I gained it back and leveled out for 3 to 4 days a the same weight. From yesterday to today I gained 2 pounds. Why would that happen on a perfect diet with good sugar levels?

Brief Answer:
It is usual.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Thanks for your question.

First I want to clear that
1) Weight loss in pregnancy is not recommended.
2) Weight gain vary with duration of pregnancy.
Approximate weight gain in pregnancy is as follow
- By end of 10 weeks 650 gram / 1.5 lb
- By end of 20 weeks 4000 gram / 9 lb
- By end of 30 weeks 8500 gram / 18.5 lb
- By end of 40 weeks 12500 gram / 27.5 lb

Also body weight may fluctuate due to following factors:
1) Consumption of a big meal.
2) Excess salt intake.
3) Water intake.
4) Before and after passing stool.
5) Hormonal changes.
6) Exercise.
7) Type of cloths and accessories used.
8) Error in weighing machine.

Fluctuation of 2 lb in a day can be considered as normal.

It is better to refrain yourself from weighing daily.
Weigh yourself once a week without wearing clothes and shoes and after you have emptied your bowels in the morning.

Hope I have answered your question.
I will be happy to answer your follow up questions if any.
Otherwise you can close the question and rate the answer.
