What Causes Fluctuation Of BP When Outside Home During Activities?

default
Posted on Tue, 27 Jan 2015
Question: what can I do to control situational blood pressure. My pressure is normal at home, once i am out at work or elsewhere it rises sharply. My doctor, (internists/cardiologist) tells me its nothing to worry about but i think it should be controlled so as not to rise so significantly during the day and its activities. It comes back into normal range once I get home and relax.

Brief Answer:
You need a 24h recording of Blood pressure.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

First of all, you've got to be sure that you measure the blood pressure right. You should be relaxed, sitting for 5-10 minutes, no smoking close to the measurement with a good quality and approved device.

If your blood pressure is below 140/90mmHg most of the times then you're OK.
If you detect excursions of your blood pressure above this range then there could be a problem.

In cases where there is inconsistency between measurements (like in your case) a 24 hour recording of the blood pressure would help. This measurement would determine whether your blood pressure poses a serious problem to your health or not.

Indirect signs of a troublesome blood pressure would include target organ damage that is abnormalities in electrocardiogram or echo, carotid artery atherosclerosis, kidney dysfunction, brain damage (cognitive disorders or radiological findings).

I hope I've helped!

Brief Answer:
It is called Holter.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

This is called "Holter". There are Holter devices that record 24 hour electrocardiograms and others that record 24 hour blood pressure.
You don't have to own one!

You'll have to wear this device for 24 hours and it will record blood pressure measurements according to your doctor's instructions. No action would be needed on your part, just patience because all those measurements may annoy you.

In my country cardiologists and certain laboratories own such devices and lend them to patients. After the patients return them, the recordings are processed and a report is given to the patient.
I don't know how it works in other countries, but I bet its the same.
Contact either your cardiologist or internist. They will be able to guide you.

I hope I've been clear and thorough enough!
If you have more questions, I'll be glad to answer.

Kind Regards!
