What Causes Frequent Bowel Movement, Dry Skin, Underactive Thyroid And Sleeplessness?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Mar 2015
Question: Below are my recent symptoms I've noticed over the last week:
increase in bowel movements (an extreme frequency in bowel movements per day!)
dry skin and hair
difficulty sleeping
very cold (still)
Over the last 10 years, I have had an underactive thyroid and have been on synthroid 100 mcg
Can your thyroid condition become over active so quickly?
I guess I would probably need to get my TSH checked again?
Are my symptoms consistent with hyperthyroid?

Brief Answer:
Too high dosage of Synthroid can be the case.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

The most probable cause of such symptoms is too high dosage of Synthroid. It does not make thyroid overactive. But it gives symptoms of overactive thyroid, as you deliver too much thyroid hormone from the outside.
You should check your TSH indeed. If the dosage of Synthroid is too high, TSH level should be very low.
If it will be fine, stool test and blood work should be done for other possible reasons of such symptoms.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
