What Causes Frequent Urination And Blood In Stool While On Amoxycillin?

default
Posted on Mon, 2 May 2016
Question: I have been experiencing discomfort around the stomach region. About a year ago was similar discomfort and my GI did an endoscopy. I was confirmed with H.Pylori. He put me on the antibitoic regime for 2 weeks. After this, was asked to do breathe test. H.Pylori was gone. But continued to have discomfort few weeks later. Breathe test confirmed that have H.Pylori. Again, did another round of antibiotics. Eventually it was gone and got better.
Now I have been experiencing a similar issue that started with pain and discomfort in the stomach region. Met with my primary care doctor. He did the breathe test and confirmed that I have H.Pylori. So he put me on Amoxycillin 500 mg (twice per day and two tablets each time) and Clarythomycin (2 tablets a day and one tablet each time). Since I started taking these medications, I seem to frequently go to the bathroom, but no diarrhea and see slight blood in the stool. What should I do? Is the medicine causing blood in the stool? Should I stop? Need help.

Brief Answer:
Monitor only for now!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this blood you have mentioned in your stools. I am not sure this is transient or permanent and will like you to monitor for us to be sure that this is permanent before investigating. If it is, we will start with a stool test. If it is not, then it might be a small wound in the anal area which is responsible for this. For now, continue your medications as scheduled.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Keep me posted with evolutions on this.

Thanks for the advice. So you don't think it is related to medication? But, can H.Pylori result in the blood in the stool?

Brief Answer:
NO!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

H. Pylori cannot cause blood in the stool. Monitor only for now and should this persist, only at that time should we probe further. Be calm and positive and we will walk over this.

I wish you well.

Doctor,
Had a question about the breathe test. When the test was ordered to be taken last week, it was later in the evening when I visited my internal medicine doctor. This is after an entire days meal - breakfast, lunch when I had done this test. A year and half ago when I had the same test taken, was not any medication and also had to do it fasting first thing in the morning.
So is the test effective this time since I had to take it without fasting and also I was already on Pantoprazole?
Stool yesterday was normal. No blood. But there is still discomfort in the stomach region. It is not focused any specific spot/area. Also, it is burning, pokey feeling. Should I continue with the antibiotics or get the test redone fasting?
Thanks

Brief Answer:
This interferes with the accuracy of the test!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Being on drugs interferes with the accuracy of this test. However, you are already on medication and no further testing result would change the course of treatment. There will be no added value from this testing. I will say continue with the antibiotics at this time and there is no added value to get retesting done. However, discuss this with them about the poor approach to testing without stopping the drugs for at least a week.

I wish you well.
