What Causes Frequent Urination While On Doxycycline?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Nov 2015
Question: Hello,

I am wondering if there is a certain way to diagnose urinary infection. I have been suffering from urgent and frequent urination for four weeks and antibiotics not only did not improve my condition but made it worse. I have done three urine tests and all of them were negative. Also I did a Trans rectal ultrasound from prostate and it was not enlarged. Also I did a cystoscopy and no problems or inflammation observed with my bladder and prostate. I am taking Doxycycline right now prescribed for 14 days. I am currently visiting a Urologist and he told me there is no certain way to diagnose infection. Is this true?

Second question

Is it possible that Antibiotics made my condition worse? I was on Cipro and Septra for a while too. I started feeling more urgency and frequency in urination after taking antibiotics.

Thanks for your help and advice.

Brief Answer:
Urologists must consider Chronic prostatitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and welcome to HCM.
As an Urologist, i will answer your query in 2 parts.
Chronic prostatitis is likely diagnosis for their treatment.
Before starting the treatment they should've done following tests
1.urine culture.
2.blood routine,creatinine,sugar,and PSA.
3.semen culture.
4.The scans (abdomen and TRUS).
1. The treatment is antibiotic,alfa-blocker and bladder relaxants or anti-cholinergics.
2. Antibiotics can't worsen your condition.
Hope your doubts are cleared.
Wish you a speedy relief.

Thanks for the reply. I have done the scans and no abnormalities found. Urine sample collection was done during cystoscopy for culture and have not heard about the result yet.

I have not done PSA test and blood routine yet. I held off with these as I was taking several medications which I thought might make test results unreliable. I have three questions.

1) Can I do the blood routine and PSA test while I am on Antibiotics (Doxycycline)?

2) I was taking Flomax for three weeks and stopped taking it three days ago. Can I do PSA test now and will it be accurate?

3) Does Chronic Prostatis always cause high PSA levels?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
PSA not affected by treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
Ideally, urine routine and culture are taken before antibiotic treatment is started.
Anyway, kindly send the reports when available, along with TRUS report, for an expert opinion.
to your questions :
1.Yes, you can do the blood routine and PSA now.
2 Yes, PSA can be done. Are you feeling now, that you stopped Flowmax.
3.High PSA isn't always seen in chronic prostatitis.
Wish you well.

Thanks for the reply. I am going to do blood and PSA tests tomorrow.

Taking Flomax for the past three weeks did not have any effects. After stopping Flomax my symptoms did not deteriorate.

By the way, Can Prostatis be diagnosed by TRUS and Cystoscopy? The Urologist performed both and he did not see any prostate inflammation or enlargement. I will try to get both reports and send them over to you.

Thanks for your help.

Brief Answer:
Cystoscopy and TRUS help in diagnosis of chronic Prostatitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.
Cystoscopy has already been done, and chronic prostatitis was not suspected.
But, it helps rule out many other causes.
TRUS, helps in diagnosis of Prostatitis.
You can send the reports.
Drink 8-10 glasses liquids daily.
Wish you good health.
