What Causes Ganglion Cyst And Myxoid Degeneration Of The Meniscus?

default
Posted on Fri, 4 Jul 2014
Question: A recent MRI listed the impression as ganglion cyst and myxoid degeneration of the meniscus. I am a half marathon runner. My questions:
can I still run even a bit? I am having a hard time learning about limitations and about what i should be doing to keep my knee stong and healthy.
What sorts of rehab should I be doing?
Are there varying degrees of the degeneration and can I keep it from getting worse?
Any help greatly appreciated. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Yes you can run after some rest.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Myxoid degeneration is the degeneration of the mensicus cartilage when there is a tear in the periphery. This occurs due to wear and tear and most commonly occurs in older individuals. The ganglion cyst is usually asymptomatic .
The treatment usually involves pain killers, muscle relaxants and adequate rest to the knee joint. You can use an elastic knee brace for relief. You need to restrict the running for few weeks and concentrate on knee strengthening exercises under the guidance of a physiotherapist.
Try cushioning the blows the knees take by
1. Maintaining the weight near ideal
2. Wearing shock absorbent walking shoes or tennis shoes and wearing cushioned shoes even around the house
3. Taking a Glucosomine/chondroitin supplement.
Conservative treatment usually helps in healing. In resistant cases, surgical repair may need to be considered. If the pain and the degenerative changes continue then in future it might lead to arthritic changes in the joint.
After a few weeks rest and physiotherapy you can resume your running gradually.
Regular exercise and joint lubricant supplements will help in preventing the further progression of these lesions.
I hope this answers your query.
