What Causes Gastritis After Having Ibuprofen For Muscle Pain?

default
Posted on Tue, 30 Dec 2014
Question: I have been taking Ibuprofen 800 mg. q 8h for about a week (along with Robaxin a muscle relaxant for back pain). About 5 days ago I severely sprained my ankle and after xrays (no fracture) they said it was a bad sprain and they gave me Tramadol q 6 hours which I took for 5 days concurrently with the Ibuprofen and Robaxin. I am a 66 year old woman. Yesterday I developed severe stomach pains (mid abdomen about level with the umbilicus). I stopped all medication. The pain lasted for hours and I drank apple juice with apple cider vinegar and it went away. Today, after eating a small amount of grilled chicken and jello and tea my stomach pains returned about 20 minutes after eating. I feel like I have damaged my stomach with the medication. My stools are normal color and consistency. I did have lots of gas yesterday during the pain but it wasn't gas pains.
I have osteoarthritis, coronary artery disease and asthma. I take Bisopropol, Pravastatin, Diltiazam and have a rescue inhaler Xoponex which I haven't needed/used for over a year. I am very active, walk everyday and take an exercise class 2x a week. I take 81mg aspirin daily also as a preventative.
I am a XXXXX patient and follow all preventative protocol. I am due for a colon screening soon but have not had any blood in any previous tests.

Brief Answer:
can cause gastritis

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is possible that the ibuprofen would have caused gastritis (inflammation/irritation of the stomach).
This is a known side effect of this class of drug. Combination with a reflux medication, particularly since you needed a high dose, may have reduced any effect on the stomach.

This would heal. You may want to consider a reflux medication even if there are no reflux symptoms. It would assist if there is damage to the stomach.
Examples are prilosec, prevacid, nexium, aciphex, protonix,

Probiotics, either on their own or in yogurt would also help with repair.

The robaxin, since it is a muscle relaxant, would also have a relaxant effect on the muscles in the abdomen. It can cause ileus (the muscles of peristalsis have difficulty contracting)
This can cause the retention of air and would have contributed to your bloating yesterday.

If the pain worsens or does not improve, it would be best to see your doctor to rule out more serious causes of abdominal pain

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
