Brief Answer:
Information

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Green colored stool is usually not caused by anything concerning. If there are no other problems going on, it is usually from eating green vegetables, particularly leafy greens. The chlorophyll colors the stool. Food coloring additives, both artificial and natural, can cause this too, as can supplements that contain any of these things.

Sometimes stool looks green if the transit time through the intestines is increased as with diarrhea. In that case, the bile pigments (from the bile the liver makes) that enters the intestines doesn't get broken down because there isn't enough time for that to happen adequately. So they give their greenish color to the stool.

Colors that are concerning are if the stool looks black and tarry which can happen if there is bleeding in the upper digestive tract. The acid in the stomach turns the blood black. Also, maroon colored stool is not a good sign either as that can indicate bleeding in the lower GI tract.

If you are having diarrhea that is sever or continues, then do go in to be seen. Otherwise, you can attribute the green color to something you ate.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.

My first thought was probably something I ate, but I haven't had many green vegtables lately. The green stool has been going on for about 36 hours. The only thing I've had to eat in the last 4 or 5 days was alot of picnic food with the Memorial day holiday. Alot of macaroni and potato salad, deviled eggs etc... Could any of that caused the green stool?

Brief Answer:
Thoughts on this

Detailed Answer:
If some of the food or drinks you ate were store bought rather than homemade, there might have been food coloring in it. Some beers and other drinks such as Kool Aid can have color added.

Sometimes the balance of the microbes in the gut can be temporarily altered, such as by taking medicine, antibiotics, and eating differently.

If you aren't having diarrhea, abdominal pain, or other problems, I'd give it about 3 more days back on your regular diet and most likely this will resolve.
