What Causes Grey And Yellow Bowel Movement In An Infant?

default
Posted on Fri, 11 Jul 2014
Question: Hi, my 11 month old girl has had grey and yellow poo for the past 3 weeks. It is loose in motion. It smells very different..
It now has quite a bit of mucous in it and is mostly pale yellow with some bowel motions of grey.
She has really bad nappy rash, and today it's bleeding. The creams I was putting in it cleared the redness up though.
She is otherwise well.. Hasn't list any weight.. No jaundice at all.. No fevers.. No vomiting or any loss of appetite. I am waiting for her stool spec to come back, but starting to get really worried as its getting worse.. She's pooing about 5 times a day.

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to introduction of new feeds

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Ms

Every baby is unique and so is their bowel frequency. Its quite common for babies to occasionally pass stools after every feeds. Its due to hyperactive gastro-colic reflex. Distension of stomach by feeds, will promote peristaltic activity in colon and causing evacuation of stools.

Any introduction of new feeds may also cause alteration in consistency or smell of stools and also appearance of mucous in stools. If the following criteria are fulfilled then there is no cause for concern
1. No blood in stools
2. Baby accepting feeds well
3. No signs of dehydration
4. Urine output adequate
5. No weight loss
6. Absence of fever
7. No excessive crying

Local application of Zinc Oxide paste to the diaper rash will be very helpful. 2 days of probiotic and curds/yoghurt in diet will be helpful.

Continue breast feedings and complimentary feed to maintain hydration and nutrition.

Do get back to me if you need any assistance anytime, will be glad to assist you.

Take Care
