Question : My son regularly has gritty-textured sour-smelling stools. He is otherwise healthy and doesn't show any particular discomforts. Is this something I should be concerned about? What could be the cause?

                                    Brief Answer:
Normal.
Detailed Answer:
Welcome To HCM. I am Dr Anshul Varshney.
I understand your concern.
First of all your son is very cute.
Now about the stools, when we start giving solid food to children , for 6 months to 1 year, they pass different form of stools, with variable consistency. As the body is learning how to digest the food perfectly!
So nothing to worry, specially if the child is Asymptomatic.
Next time you to to your paedetrician , discuss my opinion and also he will examine him.
If you have any further query please ask me.
Stay Healthy.

You said this is the case for children "6 months to 1 year". My son is 22 months. Would this answer still apply to him?

Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
You misunderstood me. I meant this happens for 6-12 months when you start giving complete solid diet to your children. Usually till the age of 1 year , child is on mostly milk diet.
You have mentioned in your details age as 1 year. But here you are saying he is 22 months old, means around 2 years.
I still feel this is normal. You will frequently see the change in stool colour and consistency with the change in food habits.
However, there is no harm in getting a Stool routine and microscopy examination done particularly to see for any worm infestation.
If you have any further query please ask me.
Stay Healthy.
