Question: Hello- My 8 year old granddaughter has severe hair loss on one side of her head. She also has a thick cradle cap looking condition on that side of her head. This has been going on for the past 6 months. Her hair is coarse texture but has always been very thin. She is a small child and a picky eater. She is alert, very intelligent, gets good grades, and is socially adept.

Brief Answer:
seborhoeic dermatitis of scalp is probable

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for posting on healthcaremagic.
In most conditions such hair loss is caused due to seborrhoeic dermatitis which is caused due to a fungal infection when the oily secretion of the scalp is on the higher side. The mention of cradle cap just confirms it.
Apply ketokonazole shampoo twice or thrice a week and the condition should resolve in a fortnight. Try that out and I hope that to be helpful. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.
Thank you.
